William MARTIN

William was born on June 21st, 1772 in Tow House, Henshaw, Haltwhistle.  William's father was Fenwick MARTIN and his mother was Izabel/Isabel THOMPSON.  His maternal grandparents were Richard THOMPSON and Ann RIDLEY. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Jonathan, John, Richard, Anne, Margaret, Ann, Isabel and Mary.  He died at the age of 78 on February 8th, 1851 in Linsey House, Chelsea, London. • General Notes

  William was an inventor and married at 42 years in1814.  From 1795 to 1814 he was in the Northumberland Militiaand was well known as a skilful fencer and an excellent jumper.In 1814 he received a silver medal and ten guineas from theSociety of Arts for the invention of the spring balance. Helived at Halfway Bank, Shields Road, Newcastle upon Tyen and  atWallsend.  His wife died there on 16th January 1832.  He died atLinsey House, London on 2nd February 1851, aged 79. Balston gives date of death as 29th. Feb. 1851.
